I was born in Mobile, Alabama and raised just north of there in a rural community on the edge of the Mobile-Tensaw River Delta. After studying English Literature at the University of Alabama, I spent most of the next decade living in Chicago and New York City. In 2005 I came to Anchorage for a short-term contract job with the Alaska Railroad, and soon thereafter I decided to make Alaska my home.

I’ve had a lifelong love for photography, but it wasn’t until I experienced the striking landscapes of the Last Frontier that I began to study and practice the art seriously, primarily as an attempt to draw on the beauty of Alaska in a creative manner. In 2006 I purchased my first medium-format film camera—a Hasselblad 500 C/M—and that is when my true education began. With that fully manual camera I honed my eye and taught myself the technical intricacies of creating images and working with film, my focus falling primarily on my natural surroundings in Alaska.

Since then I have branched off onto other photographic avenues, and in addition to my trusty Hasselblad, I now work with a variety of medium- and large-format cameras, including several of the pinhole variety. I still focus heavily on landscapes, but a glance at my portfolio will show you that my eye often wanders onto architecture and other subjects.

These days I divide much of my time between the Gulf Coast and Alaska, and you can often find me in other places in between.

Here are the latest images from my Instagram feed, which features some of my recent work as well as “behind-the-scenes” photos of what I’ve been up to lately:
